Freddie Gick
Chairman

Freddie has played leading roles in programmes designed to promote active citizenship among young people and was the author of the Heritage Buildings Guide. He became Chairman in October 2004.

Freddie is a Vice Chairman of the Sutton Coldfield Municipal Charities, Trustee of The Birmingham and Midland Institute and of the Barry Jackson Trusts, an Honorary Vice President of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and represents the Amenity Society on the Historic Towns Forum

Robert has been involved in Commercial Property for over 35 years. He worked for Hortons’ Estate Limited for over 23 years and was Chief Executive from 1999 until taking retirement in 2009. A Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors since 1990 he has been involved in many high profile developments in the Birmingham area in all sectors of commercial property: Office, Retail, Industrial and Leisure. He has also been involved in a number of joint venture or partnership developments in the region. He continues to undertake a limited amount of consultancy work related to commercial property.

Robert has always been involved in voluntary and service organisations in Birmingham and the West Midlands alongside his working life.

His family roots in Birmingham can be traced back to the start of the Industrial Revolution.
Robert is 59, married to Diana with 2 adult children.

David is well known amongst Birmingham’s business community – especially as a keen supporter of the city. Indeed, so keen is he that he has co-written and produced Birmingham’s only wide-appeal independent guidebook to the city: The Rabbit Guide to Birmingham (available in all good book stores!).

His day job is running a well-respected Birmingham PR and communications company. He has some 30 years of experience in the development and implementation of communications and public relations programmes.

David is past-Chairman of business lobby group Birmingham Forward, a former trustee and director of Birmingham Settlement and a past chairman of the Institute of Directors’ Birmingham Business Breakfast Club. He has also served as a director of Marketing Birmingham and serves on the board of the Prince’s Trust in Birmingham and Solihull and is on the Council of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

Anthony is the founder of Anthony Collins LLP a highly-regarded Birmingham firm of solicitors with a considerable presence in the public and charity sectors involved in the regeneration of social housing. He was President of the Birmingham Law Society 2002-2003.

The "Advised in Birmingham" campaign was the brainchild of Anthony which aims to promote Birmingham as a legal capital by attracting more legal work into the city and to ensure that Birmingham is a first destination for a legal career.

Paul is an architect whose career commenced in 1968 and includes 30 years with Associated Architects. As a principal of that practice he headed a design team and was responsible for a variety of projects in the arts, commercial, community, education, residential, and specialist health care sectors. He has a portfolio of work that includes a significant number of repeat commissions and award winning projects including Birmingham Hippodrome, Acorns Children’s Hospices, Aston University’s Academy of Life Sciences, various buildings at Queen Alexandra College and the redevelopment of the former science museum site.

He was President of the Birmingham Architectural Association from 1994-96 and has acted as an assessor for a variety of awards and architectural competitions.

He retired as managing director of Associated Architects in 2006 to form an architectural consultancy specialising in Client Design Advisor services, ecclesiastical projects and sustainable building design.

Glyn is the former non-executive chairman of four leading Midlands businesses, Countrywide Homes, BK Midlands, BRMB/Capital Gold and contaminated land remediation company Envirotreat. He has a large network of business contacts and is committed to raising the profile of the Society in the business community. He runs his own chartered surveying consultancy practice and is a practicing arbitrator.

Glyn is the elected business representative on the board of the Birmingham, Coventry and Black Country City Region and serves on the council of Aston University as well as being a vice-chairman of the Birmingham Civic Society and a trustee of the Crescent Theatre

Bob will be a familiar face to most people as a presenter on Central News for Carlton TV. He has been working in television in the region since 1973.

In the world of business, Bob is an Executive Director of public relations company Seal Communications. He is also a founder member of the Development Board of Macmillan Cancer Care and of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

Nick manages his own consultancy business providing services to Learning and Skills Councils, Business Links and Chambers of Commerce. He is also a Liveryman of the Saddlers' Company, a Trustee of the Museum of Leathercraft and a Prince's Trust mentor.

Nick was appointed to the office of Honorary Secretary in March 2006.

Events Secretary

Peter Miles is a retired businessman who joined the Society in 2005. As Events Secretary he has led the way into breathing new life into the events programme which has run a number of highly successful events during the current year.

His main interest outside the society is as Chairman of the Midlands Antique Collectors Circle. He is also a Patron of Birmingham Choral Union.

 




Ross Bellamy
Conservation & Heritage Panel delegate

Ross represents the Society on the City Council’s Conservation & Heritage Panel which examines proposals in Conservation Areas as well as individual plans that affect Grade I and Grade II* buildings in the city.
He is a former Chairman of the Jewellery Quarter Association, served as a Warden of the Assay Office and was President of the Midlands District Timber Trades Benevolent Society.  Ross is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Life Member of the English-Speaking Union.

Yvonne Maslen
Blue Plaques Secretary

Yvonne is a former professional food buyer for the NHS. She used to count painting and sculpting among her hobbies until she realised that she had little talent in that particular area.

However she does have a keen interest in art and sculpture and this encompasses public art in particular.

Yvonne is a dedicated and active member of the Society and sits on the Heritage Committee and Public Art Sub-Committee of the Society and is also Assistant Events Secretary.

 




Councillor John Alden

Councillor Alden has sat on the City Council since 1983 and represents the Harborne Ward of Birmingham. He served as Lord Mayor during 2003-4 and was Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture 2004-6 and is currently Chairman of the Leisure, Sport and Culture Overview and Scrutiny Committee

The Society has two political represenatives who sit on the Executive Council and Councillor Alden is the Conservative nominee.

Dr Joe Jordan

Joe is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He was a consultant gynaecologist to Birmingham Women's Hospital until 2002 and Medical Director of Birmingham Women's Hospital Trust from 1985 until 2002.

Joe was founder President of the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (1976-78), President of the International Federation for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (1978-81) and founder President of the European Federation for Colposcopy (1999-2004).

Jagjit Singh Taunque MBE DL

Jagjit sat on the West Midlands County Council for a number of years. He is Chairman of the Birmingham Valuation Tribunal and of the Punjab Culture Centre, Trustee of Birmingham Council of Faiths and Patron of Birmingham International Council.

He served for some time as a representative of Birmingham Inter-faith Council before being elected a life member.

He became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in HM The Queen's 2000 Birthday Honours for service to community relations in Birmingham

Councillor Ray Hassall is the Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture and was first elected to the City Council in May 1990.

Formerly a leading member of Scrutiny, Councillor Hassall has served on the Coordinating, Health and Transportation and Street Services Overview and Scrutiny Committees.  He was the Chairman of the Leisure, Sport & Culture Overview and Scrutiny Committee from 2004 to 2006.  He has also been a member of the West Midlands Local Government Association and was a member of the Planning Committee for 14 years.

The experience he has gained over the last eighteen years is of immense benefit in his position as Cabinet Member, a role and challenge that he has committed himself to approach with enthusiasm and determination.
