Public Art

The Public Art Sub-Committee consists of Marcus Hawley (Chairman), Yvonne Maslen; Professor Tom Jones of the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design; Professor George Noszlopy, author (amongst others) of "Public Sculpture of Birmingham" and a Research Fellow at the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design; Peter Miles, Chairman of the Midland Antique Collectors' Circle and former Secretary of the Friends of Birmingham Museums.
This sub-committee meets regularly to recommend to the Planning Committee new works of art, examine current city council strategy for preservation and conservation of the current stock of public art, including statues and memorials in public ownership and on display and also those which are currently in store.

The group submits proposals and suggestions to where works might be better located and is currently involved in a dialogue with the Museum & Art Gallery directorate concerning a corporate/civic partnership "adopt a statue" scheme which would involve sponsorship of ongoing maintenance of public art; a programme of regular civic commemorations is currently being formulated to raise awareness of the achievements of the person commemorated in the statue.
