Birmingham Civic Society’s 2020 Next Generation Awards may be cancelled but we still want to support citizenship education through a home learning resource pack.

With schools currently closed due to coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and social distancing the new normal, we have taken the decision to cancel the competition element of this year’s Next Generation Awards (NGAs). However, given the storm we are all facing, we believe there is no better time for people to learn more about community action, especially younger people.

There are plenty of examples all around us, but we also want to give young people in the schools with whom we work (and beyond) the opportunity to continue developing active citizenship skills at home. And so, our Next Generation Award team has adapted elements of our scheme into a citizenship home learning resource pack.

The citizenship home learning resource pack contains worksheets and templates for young people, and an assessment guide and a certificate template for teachers.

We hope that lots of schools will be able to include this pack into their home learning offer so that young people across Birmingham can continue to develop ideas for projects that tackle some of the biggest issues facing our communities during this difficult time.

If you need inspiration, have a look at this Earth Day assembly presentation from one of our 2019 finalists, Dream Green.
