Michael Dring and Matthew Vaughan from our Planning Committee met with Brutiful Birmingham to discuss the challenges involved in retaining our post-war architectural heritage.
Modernist architecture is an important part of Birmingham’s character, and we believe these buildings should be conserved – but this can sometimes be difficult to achieve economically. Nevertheless, it is better for the environment to retain and refurbish than demolish and rebuild – so central government needs to change tax rules to make this option more profitable.
Through the provision of professional, fair and constructive planning advice, our Planning Committee supports sustainable development and promotes high quality design.
We act as a critical friend to developers, professions, the local authority, and communities. We also engage with communities to provide support in planning matters which are a cause of concern.
