Statue of Queen Victoria and Site of Hew Locke’s Foreign Exchange
The Birmingham Civic Society represents a modern vibrant city, epitomised by the city motto “Forward”. We welcome and embrace new ideas and change whilst cherishing our heritage and promoting civic pride.
Throughout its history the Society has led successful campaigns to restore, relocate, or reinstate sculptures across the city centre, including the statue of Queen Victoria which is currently the site of Hew Locke’s temporary art installation Foreign Exchange.
Recent comments on this installation by one of our Trustees have caused hurt and disappointment amongst our members and the wider Birmingham community. We would like to clarify that these comments were made in a private capacity and do not represent the view of The Birmingham Civic Society.
For over 100 years, the Society has worked to make Birmingham a better place for everyone. We will always celebrate tradition, encourage diversity, and embrace change. This is what makes Birmingham the great city it is.
